Another contender for top Korean movie of 2019? Well, pretty close! This exciting action comedy about a dead gas creeping through the streets of Seoul and the two characters who must out climb it is well worth your time.

Take Point (Korea, 2018)

An action thriller from Korea? Oh yes please would be the usual answer. This movie feels like a military shooting games - all style, all glitz, but is there any substance? Watch my review to find out more.

I like to think of Asian cinema as having a few very distinct markets. There’s the Japanese – known for their horror, monster and obscure movies. South East Asia gives us very distinct gory horrors and action films, while China, Hong Kong and Taiwan give us a mish-mash of genres – good action films, good horror films, but bland comedies and movies with mostly incoherent storylines.

But Korea gives us something more unique – essentially the Asian version of Hollywood. Remarkable horror films like The Host and Train to Busan, popular romantic comedy movies like My Sassy Girl, interesting awards films like Parasite – and of course the outstanding Sympathy trilogy in Old boy and Sympathy for Mr and Lady Vengeance.

But Korean thrillers are something else entirely. And if you enjoyed the spectacular I Saw The Devil – then I am confident you will love every second of The Gangster The Cop The Devil.

Parasite (South Korea, 2019)

Parasite is a highly acclaimed, well directed and well written movie. It's a very interesting black comedy about a family of scam-artists who slowly infiltrate an upper middle class family's life.

It’s a little known (it’s actually a well-known fact) that Koreans make decent horror and thriller films. It’s also a known fact that America loves to remake them.

There are two reasons to watch this movie – 1) to compare it to the inevitable American remake (there is a Canadian film set for release in 2020, but other than the title there is no link) and 2) Bo-Yeong Park. She is absolutely gorgeous – but if you’re after a good film of her, you’re better off with “A Werewolf Boy (2012)”.
